| My name is Charles Hibbs and I
have been involved in music since the 5th grade. I turn 49 in 2002.
I want you to know that you joining your school music program can be a life
changing event. It was for me. My musical endeavors have
enriched my life so much that I cannot imagine being without music.
Participating in school band provided companionship and a sense of belonging
that would have otherwise been denied me.
Being in band or orchestra will provide you the opportunity to work as a
team toward a worthy goal as you work toward improving your playing in order
to support the band or orchestra and playing in small groups. You will
also have the opportunity to work and excel as an individual as you work on
solo literature.
The social aspects of the school music program are great. You have
many people from all walks of life coming together to translate symbols on a
page (written music) into an aural experience that has the capacity to
uplift and affirm life itself. You will have to learn to get along
with these other people and settle differences and accept other people's
opinions as valid as you spend many hours together, both in the rehearsal
room and on trips to and from performances and tours.
I urge you to commit at least a full year to learning to play your
instrument. It is hard work. It is rewarding. It is
worthwhile. It will make you more unique in this universe because
you will be a musician. |
